R.N.L.I.TRENT CLASS LIFEBOAT ( * * * )
* Note: Ten pounds sterling on every kit sold will be donated to the RNLI, Registered Charity No. 209603.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) is a registered charity which exists to save lives at sea. It provides, on call, the 24-hour service necessary to cover search and rescue requirements to 50 miles (80 kms) out from the coast of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
The Trent class lifeboat has been designed and developed by RNLI staff as a permanently afloat lifeboat to replace the now ageing fleet of Waveney's. There will be a total of 40 in the fleet when the building programme has been completed, not including relief boats. The design requirement was for a lifeboat capable of great speed and providing protected propellers and the ability to take the ground if required. The Trent is capable of 25 knots and, like all new all-weather boats, is self-righting after a capsize.
The Trent is constructed from fibre reinforced composite (FRC) which combines strength with light weight. The hull, deck and superstructure is of sandwich construction. The hull is subdivided into six compartments and the wheelhouse contains seating for six crew with provision for one stretcher in the wheelhouse and another in the forecabin. The forecabin has seating for 10 survivors.
The kit contains approximately 1200 parts and is recommended for experienced modellers. The contents include a detailed one-piece GRP hull; brass propellers; propshafts, tubes, rudders. Die-cut and printed styrene parts for the deck, superstructure and a highly detailed wheelhouse interior which includes 7 seats, tables and instrumentation. Die-cut windows. Nearly 200 white metal castings and 330 etched brass parts. Ready-made model stand. Names and registration numbers to build any one of 17 vessels in the class. Comprehensive instructions and drawings. With twin propellers it is a highly manoeuvrable model and performance on the water is realistic and true to scale.
