VLIESTROOM - DAMEN BUOY-LAYING VESSEL

Vliestroom and her sister ships MV Nieuwe Diep and Schuitengat were built in 1987-90 by Damen Shipyards for the Dutch Ministry of Transport. Powered by 2 X Deutz diesel engines, the vessels feature twin Koort nozzles, four bladed propellers, a 90 kW bow thruster, and a forepeak mounted 7.5 ton buoy-handling crane. The folding main mast and two hydraulic cantilevering radar masts together with the low draught flat bottomed hull allow for a very versitile craft, which can encounter low bridges and shallow waters in and around Holland. All Three vessels have a crew of seven with accomodation for nine.

The Model: This unusual and distinctive model is based on the full-sized Vliestroom, currently operating out of Hellevoetsluis, near Rotterdam. The detailed wheelhouse interior includes etched brass instrumentation. The main mast is made to fold and the large deck crane which swivels and elevates will without a doubt be a challenge for the more experienced modeller wishing to radio control it (one method is described in the assembly instructions). Without a working bow thruster, Vliestroom's performance is outstanding due to her steerable nozzles.
Specifications: Scale 1:40, Length 960mm, Beam 220mm, Displacement 10 kg

The kit contains:

  • a detailed fibreglass hull,
  • full running gear including brass propellers and steerable nozzles, a bow thruster tube,
  • deck and superstructure are cut using CNC equipment to ensure accurate fit of parts,
  • a small HIAB crane and resin-cast dinghy; a set of buoys,
  • a set of etched brass and cast metal fittings; decals, wire, rod, etc. to build the model as shown,
  • full-size plans and comprehensive instructions with perspective assembly drawings.
